So how’s that “right” to worship any god treating you, America?
How’s it goin’ in the land of the free to worship and pray openly to any ol’ god (or goddess) that happens to impress you at any given moment?
Well, if Iowa is any indicator, things are going pretty much exactly as Scripture warns (see: Romans 1). We have been given over under the unfolding wrath of God. We are blind, deaf, and stone-hearted to His truth. We are also both proud and confident.
Why?
‘Cause we’re Americans!
And while it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the hourly examples of God’s judgment upon us, nowhere has our insanity been more perfectly summarized this week than in the Iowa State Legislature, where, in the name of – what else? – good ol’ American religious pluralism, a wiccan was invited to deliver the invocation at the State House of Representative’s opening ceremony.
In ‘Blessed Be, Aho, and Amen,’ Wiccan Priestess Delivers Prayer for Iowa House, linked through the Drudge Report this week, we are treated to the following tale of religious pluralism gone wild, happy, and free in the heartland of America:
“Blessed Be, Aho, and Amen,” aren’t the words members of the Iowa House of Representatives are accustomed to hear at the closing of the invocation marking the House’s opening ceremonies, but that’s just what happened yesterday when a Wiccan priestess delivered the prayer.
“We call this morning to God, Goddess, Universe, that which is greater than ourselves to be here with us today,” said Deborah Maynard, who delivered the first prayer by a Wiccan in the assembly. “By the Earth that is in our bones and centers us, may all here remember our roots and those whom we are here to represent….. We call this morning to Spirit, which is ever present, to help us respect the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Be with this legislative body and guide them to seek justice, equity and compassion in the work that is before them today.”
But don’t worry. Some Christians noticed and “took action”!
The story continues:
A number of Christian lawmakers didn’t attend the opening ceremony to protest the priestess’ historic invocation.
Others, like State Rep. Rob Taylor (R-Iowa), turned their backs during the priestess’ prayer. Taylor said he asked himself “What would Jesus do?” and decided Jesus would “be in the presence of a prayer, but peacefully protest.” He added that “everyone has the right to come into our chamber – it is the people’s chamber – and pray and she did and this was the way for me to peacefully protest.”
Let’s focus on that last sentence, ’cause it’s a doozy…and very important: “. . .everyone has the right to come into our chamber – it is the people’s chamber – and pray and she did and this was the way for me to peacefully protest.”
This, my fellow Americans, is what it looks like when the authority of God is replaced with the authority of “we the people”.
This is what it looks like when people who are at best biblically illiterate and at worst overtly anti-Christian are placed by God into positions of leadership.
This is the rebellion of religious pluralism in action, and wicked leadership is but one of the many consequences that we are reaping through that rebellion. (See: Well color me satanic and call me America! and Openly reject God’s First Commandment? YES! WE! CAN!)
This is what freedom, liberty, and justice look like when severed from the Nature of God as revealed in His Word.
May God grace His people with the strength, opportunity, and fortitude to stand upon, proclaim, and apply His Nature as revealed in His Word right here and now in this dark hour…while there is yet time. (See: How to truly love (and really save) America.)
