With another election year November in the books, American Christians are well served to remind ourselves and the rest of the world (especially the proud American part) that Jesus Christ isn’t running for anything.
Never has.
Never will.
He doesn’t need your vote (or anything else).
Jesus is King. Jesus is Lord. Jesus is God.
He literally owns every vote and voter already.
All authority on Heaven and on earth has been given to Him. And yes, that includes right here in 2014 America.
Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. ~ Matthew 28:18-20 (emphasis added)
He’s not seeking anyone’s ascent or agreement on the matter of His lordship, kingship, or anything else. He’s not out to negotiate and He’s certainly not in campaign mode – at least not in the controlled/contrived modern American political sense. And we shouldn’t be either when it comes to the open, clear, public proclamation and application of His lordship in every realm of His creation.
The true or counterfeit nature of our faith is evidenced by our conduct in practice. If we truly love Him, we will strive to learn and keep His commandments. (See: John 14)
Do we believe that Christ the King has spoken perfectly and in detail on matters of law, economics, and education? If so, then we will strive to better understand and actively apply what He has said in those realms.
If we do not actually love or believe Him to be King, then we will dismiss the authority of what He has said on these matters.
It’s as simple as that.
It all comes down to faith, as in: Do we really believe?
Do we really believe that He is King right now? Do we really believe that all of His creation is subject to His lordship?
When, by God’s grace, we demonstrate true belief through a desire for obedience and submission to His lordship in practice in every realm of life here in His creation, then – and only then – will those realms produce true and lasting life, peace, prosperity, and joy.
So long as we choose any other route to peace, prosperity, and happiness, no matter how warmly patriotic or emotionally attractive those paths may seem, they can and will only lead to…well…where we are now and the much worse that is right around the corner.
One of the great lessons of America seems to be that even the very concepts of liberty and freedom themselves must become contorted into destructive, enslaving lies when they are severed from explicit connection to the name and nature of Jesus Christ. Even the many good and beautiful things in our own foundational governing documents are being proven powerless to preserve true liberty, freedom, or any other good thing.
And why?
Because they have been separated from explicit connection to Him. They have been severed from the lifeline of Truth personified: Jesus Christ the reigning King of creation.
This is the central truth that we are called and equipped to proclaim right here and now in this proud and dying culture. This is the truth that we are called to stand and build upon in our homes, families and businesses. This is the one and only truth that can supernaturally save and resurrect this rotting corpse of a civilization – one supernatural salvation at a time.
May God grace His people with true and active faith, so that they might take up His Gospel-fueled Great Commission right here and now.
