Contrary to countless proclamations routinely rolling off the tongues of tens of millions of Americans, most of whom claim to be Christians, the US Constitution is not the gold standard for law in America (or anywhere else).
It’s a very beautiful and impressive document in many unique and wondrous ways, but it is far from perfect. It has flaws, as all man-made things do, and some of those flaws are quite significant.
The true gold standard for law (and everything else) in God’s creation is Scripture.
The Constitution is only as good as it conforms with the Nature of God as revealed in His Law, and every time the Constitution deviates from the Law of God, the Constitution is in error. Always. Every time. No exceptions.
This shouldn’t be news or a controversial statement in a land loaded with folks who love to loudly and proudly claim Christianity.
But it is.
And we all know it.
Which is precisely why our approach to law, civil government, and pretty much everything else in “Christian” America is producing one cultural trainwreck after another…and why these trainwrecks will never stop until we repent of our rebellion and submit to Christ as King in practice.

I was reminded of this reality in pointed fashion again and again this week as I watched hearings unfold in Tennessee’s General Assembly as the House Civil Justice Subcommittee considered HB1412, also known as the “Tennessee Natural Marriage Defense Act”. (For more on this, check out The Gaystapo goes for the kill in Tennessee…and what Christians are going to do about it.)
There are many thoughts that I hope to share soon with regard to the hearings and process that so quickly dispatched HB1412 in the “Bible Belt Buckle” State of Tennessee (a State whose legislature is loaded with professing Christians, has a Republican super-majority, yet could not even get this bill out of its first subcommittee and, even worse, could not get even two of the three Republican professing Christians on that committee to vote for it), but my schedule this week is pretty much insane, so I don’t have the time to go into the details that I hope to share soon. That’s not a complaint, by the way; I’m thrilled and thankful to have the opportunities that I’ve had to help and encourage Christians who are beginning to wake up and actively engage the enemies of Christ who are pillaging (or enabling the pillaging of) the culture.
With the weather wackiness (ice and sleet) that was threatening the legislative day in Nashville, I had to get up at 3 a.m. and hit the road by 4 a.m. in order to feel confident about arriving in time for the Devotional that I was slated to deliver at 7:30, and I didn’t get home ’til after 11 last night. That said, it was a wonderful, productive, encouraging day from beginning to end, even with the vote on HB1412 taken into consideration. The Devotional went very well, and I hope to share details and hopefully encouraging thoughts on the whole episode soon. (You can get more context on the Devotional opportunity by reading Two things to pray about, please.)
In the meantime, I just wanted to remind you (and me) about the critical nature of our really, truly, actually, and explicitly establishing the Word of God as our foundation for all things, certainly including law and civil government.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU as always for your prayers, encouragement, and support!
They were so very much needed and appreciated this week. God is good through His faithful people.
We have much work to do…in Tennessee and everywhere else in God’s creation.
Soli Deo Gloria…and let’s roll!
